Our Source of Joy

Of all my privileges, Bruiser is one of the greatest.

Almost six years ago when he came into my life.

He was introduced to me by the Attendant of my Orthodontic at the Dental Clinic where I had several session months for fixing my teeth. She apparently acquired a new pet and told me that there are several puppies for sale at Stapes Animal Shop. I am really afraid of dogs but somehow she seemed to enchant me with her stories of how lovable her puppy was. She was able to convince me to go with her to the shop one afternoon.

There were four puppies in the kennel. All of them were Japanese Spitzes. Among them was this cute little puppy who looks so innocent and defenseless. He has a long, thick, white coat with pointed muzzle and ears. He was one month old weighing 1.5 kilograms. He captivated my heart. Instantly I felt the need to cuddle him in my arms and to fill him with so much love. I named him Bruiser - after Elle Woods’ dog in Legally Blonde of which I’m a fan.

When I brought him home, my brother adored him. We took turns on feeding him with evaporated milk. He seemed so hungry that he drank almost a can. His belly bloated and threw up. I cleaned up the mess. Huh!

My father protested and told me that he doesn’t want any pet in the house and ordered me to return Bruiser immediately the following day. How can I return him? I already paid the shop and it was a closed and completed transaction. I promised to take care of him and to be responsible for all his clutter. In some way, I was able to persuade Papa to give in to my pleadings.

Days passed and Bruiser became the apple of everybody’s eyes. Why not? He is high-spirited, intelligent , very playful, cheerful, proud and super affectionate. He can actually dance. He knows how to knock the door. He can twinkle his eyes. He will sit and behave if you tell him so. He will kiss and embrace you with all his heart. He is such a darling!

We celebrate his birthday every 4th of April. Next year he will turn 9. Just recently he had his Annual Anti-Rabies and DHLP Shot complete with Grooming and Nail Clip.

He brings so much joy to the family and we look forward to many happy years with him.

Thank you for coming into our lives Bruise. We love you so much!

Dream Mood

Acoustic waves of Sitti’s Bosa Nova rendition repeatedly fills my entire room. So warm and soothing, can’t help but sing along with a smile in my heart.

For you who constantly visited me in my dreams the past nights, (surprisingly after some months of absence) this comes to tell you that I secretly relished the disturbance and I am …

“Overjoyed”

Over time, I’ve been building my castle of love
Just for two, though you never knew you were my reason
I’ve gone much too far for you now to say
That I’ve got to throw my castle away

Over dreams, I have picked out a perfect come true
Though you never knew it was of you I’ve been dreaming
The sandman has come from too far away
For you to say come back some other day

And though you don’t believe that they do
They do come true
For did my dreams
Come true when I looked at you
And maybe too, if you would believe
You too might be
Overjoyed, over loved, over me

Over hearts, I have painfully turned every stone
Just to find, I had found what I’ve searched to discover
I’ve come much too far for me now to find
The love that I’ve sought can never be mine

And though you don’t believe that they do
They do come true
For did my dreams
Come true when I looked at you
And maybe too, if you would believe
You too might be
Overjoyed, over loved, over me

And though the odds say improbable
What do they know
For in romance
All true love needs is a chance
And maybe with a chance you will find
You too like I
Overjoyed, over loved, over me

Do dogs dream?

While dogs are sleeping they sometimes moan, whimper, growl and have involuntary body gestures such as twitching, tail wagging and lip licking. In fact if you watch your dog sleep, it sleeps in very much the same way we humans sleep. This phenomenon begs the often asked question: Do dogs dream. The evidence supports that yes, dogs dream.

Dogs are similar to humans with regard to their sleep patterns and their brain wave activity. Experiments testing canine brain wave activity during sleep have been reproduced and measured by researchers using an electroencephalogram (EEG). As they first fall asleep dogs are in a 'lighter' sleep mode where their breathing is very regular and they can be easily awakened. Once they enter deep sleep they are more difficult to awaken and their brain wave activity is greatly increased. Like humans, once in deep sleep they enter a stage where their breathing becomes more irregular and they have rapid eye movements (REM) where actual dreaming takes place. They enter and exit this dreaming stage several times per night. This rapid eye movement stage has this name because behind their closed eyelids, the dog's eyes are moving rapidly back and forth. Presumably, they are watching the images that they are dreaming about. It is during this stage where they may also have involuntarily vocalizations and body movements. Even if it seems like they are having a bad dream it is best not to wake a sleeping dog. Dogs, like humans, need uninterrupted sleep for healthy mental activity.

Are all dogs alike with regard to their dreaming? Research suggests that small dogs dream more than larger dogs. Dream frequency also seems to be related to age where puppies dream more than adult dogs. Given that dogs can't tell us their dreams, the 64,000 dollar question is what are dogs dreaming about. It is likely that dogs dream in a similar fashion to humans, dreaming up canine fantasies and the everyday things that make up their existence like chasing, playing and eating.
